What was at one distinct point in time the effluvium of a Saturday night barroom tirade has become a reality: Kunkelfruit Wiki, the home for free articles about how popular products are made, does now indeed exist--and can be found here.  Of course, in its perinatal infancy, the wiki has both enjoyed some progress and suffered a few minor setbacks.  I offer up this report in the hopes that those who read it might be inspired to participate.

As the New Economy saw goes, content is king.  I have tried to keep that in mind while I’ve nurtured the wiki through its early stages of development.  Kunkelfruit Wiki currently boasts sixteen articles, according to the algorithm that calculates page counts and posts it on the main page, a bit of php code borrowed directly from Wikipedia’s main page.  (Imitation is the sincerest form of ambition.)  The algorithm no doubt becomes more accurate as the count grows.  The reality is that there are ten articles:

* Apple iPod nano
* Asbestos
* Malai Creamy Chocolate
* Nintendo Wii
* McDonald’s Big Mac
* Soccer Cleats
* Denim Jeans
* Home Mortgage
* Perdue Chicken Breast
* Starbucks Tall Nonfat Decaf Latte

Two I wrote myself, the rest I hired freelance hands to peck out.  I found them through guru.com, which I must say is an excellent resource for upstart entrepreneurs.  I’ve been very impressed with the professionalism of the writers I’ve worked with so far--and with the overall quality of what they’ve written.  In the long term, I’m hoping that Kunkelfruit Wiki will serve as a gathering point and rallying call for a community of volunteer editors and contributors.

In the meantime, as we train, so to speak, in relative obscurity, I feel it’s best to build up content, to seed the soil, by any means necessary--in particular, by as liberal a sprinkling of cash as my miniscule academian’s budget can muster.

My goal is to get a hundred articles up on the site and then to find the funds to launch a publicity campaign.  The Kunkelfruit Wiki community might look something like this: me, the evangelist, will drum up curiosity out in the media circus while a small and elite cohort of champions edit volunteer contributions and post original articles of their own.  I’m perfectly ready and willing, in due time--when content quantity is up--to speak about Kunkelfruit on radio, TV, or whatever medium will have me.  I simply and unambiguously believe in the idea, in its merit.

When I said ‘relative’ obscurity I was alluding to a recent development: I posted a press release on prweb.com this past Monday.  On Tueday, lo and behold, gawker.com ran a post about Kunkelfruit Wiki.  Since then, a couple other blog aggregators followed the story.  We’ve also been added to Stumble Upon.  As a consequence of all this exposure, traffic has picked up considerably.  This to me is all very encouraging, a proof of concept of sorts.  There’s also now a link to Kunkelfruit Wiki on the Wikipedia entry for ‘consumerism’.  A month ago, a Google search on 'kunkelfruit' yielded zero results.  Now it gets around 600, give or take.

Content is king.  So for the next couple months I’m intent on reaching that goal of a hundred articles.  Would anyone care to join me?  There’s a list of article ideas here.
