There’s an interesting article in this week’s Economist (November 24th-30th 2007) about the work of a maverick physicist/mathematician named Garrett Lisi . Lisi has been studying the geometry of the E8 Lie group, which was first explored by the Norwegian Sophus Lie in 1887. E8 has 248 dimensions. Lisi is trying to use E8 to create a theory of everything, that is, a coherent theoretical framework that includes all matter and force.
Lisi’s website.
Lisi’s paper on arXiv.org, entitled, “An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything.”
