It's been many, many months since I last posted anything on this site, and for that, I apologize. There are a couple of noteworthy bits of information I'd like to pass along. Christine Klocek-Lim, who contributed the poem "String Theory" to our collection Riffing on Strings, just announced that she has been awarded the 2008 Ellen LaForge Poetry Prize for her six astronomy-themed poems collectively entitled, "dark matter." A hearty congratulations to her! She has also announced that the latest edition of her online journal Autumn Sky Poetry is now available. Featured poets include Mary Alexandra Agner, Ed Bennett, Kay Cosgrove, Dennis Greene, Arthur Leung, Corey Mesler, Burgess Needle, Faith Watson, Gail White, and Kelley White. Some good news of my own: a paper I wrote entitled "Imagining Braneworlds in String Theory Technical Discourse," which was published in the journal Discourse, won the 2008 Bruns Essay Prize, sponsored by the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts. There's a piece about it on the Royal Holloway College web site. Other news: we've entered Riffing on Strings in a couple book awards, the Independent Book Publishers Association Benjamin Franklin Awards and the Independent Publishers "IPPY " Awards, under the category "Science." Semifinalist announcements happen in late April/early May. We'll keep you posted. I'm currently working on the third draft of the last chapter of my doctoral thesis, about string theory images in literary/imaginative writing. I hope to submit my thesis in August or September. Then it will be a matter of surviving the viva... |
